Controversial Tribune innovations chief Lee Abrams and former Daily News editor Ron Kaye, who now runs the RonKayeLA news site, will discuss "The Future of News" at the Los Angeles Press Club at 7 p.m. this Thursday, Nov. 13. Everyone is welcome.
The Chicago-based Abrams, in his first L.A. appearance, is sure to talk about the changes he recently advocated for the Los Angeles Times and how he would change Tribune's other big property, KTLA-TV. The panel will be moderated Ezra Palmer, former managing editor of Yahoo News and a Wall Street Journal veteran. Please come!

 The Los Angeles Press Club celebrated its 50th Annual Southern California Journalism Awards on June 21, honoring ABC's Bob Woodruff with the Daniel Pearl Award for courage and integrity in journalism. KNBC's Ana Garcia was the recipient of the Quinn Award for lifetime achievement, and the Los Angeles Times' Steve Lopez received the President's Award.
During the ceremony, which was dedicated to the memory of longtime broadcast newsman Hal Fishman, the club honored outstanding achievement among journalists in Southern California. The Los Angeles Times' Melissa Healy was named top print journalist of the year at a large circulation newspaper, while Anat Rubin was the winner in the smaller-circulation category. Antonio Valverde of KMEX won television journalist honors, and Steven Cuevas of KPCC won the radio journalist honors.

 Local author David Rensin came to the press club on April 30 to speak about his new book, "All For a Few Perfect Waves: The Audacious Life and Legend of Rebel Surfer Miki 'Da Cat' Dora."
"I surfed for years, and along the way... I discovered Miki," Rensin recalled. "He was the king of Malibu."

 Russ Stanton, the new editor of the Los Angeles Times, spoke about the future of the Times and the news business in general in an appearance at the press club on April 24.
Stanton's remarks, followed by a question-and-answer session, marked one of his first public appearances since becoming the 126-year-old daily's 14th editor.

 More than 100 alumni of the Los Angeles Herald Examiner gathered at the Los Angeles Press Club on March 13. Daily News editor Ron Kaye, former KCBS political editor Linda Breakstone and LA Times "Top of the Ticket" editor Don Frederick served on a panel to discuss the Examiner, hosted by moderator Alex Ben Block.
The evening served as a tribute to Herald Examiner editor James Bellows, who received a standing ovation from the standing-room-only crowd.

 The Los Angeles Press Club honored the best in entertainment journalism on Feb. 21, giving out awards for best news story, best feature story and best critic in print, television, radio and online media.
In the print categories, Matthew Garrahan of the Financial Times received the award for best news story, Matthew Belloni of Esquire Magazine received the award for best feature story and LA Weekly's Ella Taylor was named best critic.
In the television categories, Jacob H. Soboroff of Why Tuesday? received the best news story award, Jeffrey K. Howard of KCLV in Las Vegas received the best feature award, and Shawn Edwards and Russ Simmons of Fox4News in Kansas City were named best critics. LA Weekly's Nikki Finke swept the online awards, winning best news story, best feature story and best critic.
